Good afternoon West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .
BLOG BACK FROM OKLAHOMA AND ILLNESS (IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE?)
It is good to be back. It is good to sit upright after getting knocked down by one of those nasty summer colds that make you want to take an ice-pick to your noggin to let the pressure out. Thank God for Nyquil and Tylenol P.M.
It is also good to be back the Hubbaplex after my ongoing quest to find the hottest place in the United States. We found it. It is just outside of Lone Wolf, Oklahoma at Quartz Mountain. Go there.
L.A. CORNERING THE MARKET ON DEFENSE NOW AT TEXAS TECH
http://www.redraiders.com/stories/080508/foo_080508002.shtml
The move of L.A. Reed from safety to corner indicates just how much has changed regarding the Texas Tech defense in the past year. This move just wouldn’t have happened under Lyle Setencich. More and more, from late last season to the spring drills we’ve seen a defensive philosophy that doesn’t worry so much about “experience” as it does getting the best athletes, playmakers and PLAYERS on the field regardless of position, experience level or anything else other than, “Can you play?” . This is a good thing.
Whether it is a philosophy by Ruffin, by Mike Leach or everyone as a group, it indicates again that the Tech coaches realize that they must get better athletes on the defensive side of the ball and then put them into position to make plays. That means Mike Leach has to let his defense gamble some and take a chance on getting burned in order to make a few big plays. It is a change that I think he’s willing to do. Turnover margin is going to be huge this fall for Texas Tech. If they can get a few more possessions each half than their opponents they will be well on their way to winning the ten or 11 games this season folks are hoping for.
The move of Reed to corner also tell us the coaches think Anthony Hines is fully recovered, healthy and ready to go. That is another good thing because so many were high on this guy before his off-field incident cost him so much time.
Bottom line is that Tech coaches on the defensive side seem much more willing and able to make these kinds of moves now than in the past. Whatever the reason, be thankful for it if you’re a Tech fan.
