5 THINGS WE KNOW ON A FRIDAY: JULY 25, 2008.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

5 THINGS WE KNOW ON A FRIDAY: JULY 25, 2008.

1. Unless State law is changed, Lubbock will NEVER go wet. The deck is stacked against those wanting an up or down vote because of the number of signatures required in a short time. It can’t be done. No matter the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce or another weak attempt to organize Tech students to drive it, it won’t happen.

http://lubbockonline.com/stories/072308/loc_308177766.shtml That said, I find it funny that there’s a group of Baptists in town that are gearing up to oppose the effort to even bring it to a vote. I guess they either hate democracy or can’t read. Remind me again of that passage in the Bible that says beer and wine are evil? http://www.myfoxlubbock.com/myfox/pages/News/Detail?contentId=7061449&version=1&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=3.2.1 I guess there aren’t any Baptists in the Lubbock of Chamber of Commerce either. We Methodist really make this economy run, don’t we!

2. The WNBA took a huge credibility hit this week. No, not the fight where former Texas Tech Lady Raider Plenette Pierson refused to bow down to Candace Parker and worship her like ESPN tells everyone to do but rather by the fact that 50-year old commentator and former great Nancy Lieberman came out of retirement and played last night for Detroit. http://sports.espn.go.com/wnba/recap?gameId=280724004 If a 50-year old can come play in your league, no matter his or her conditioning level, your leagues got problems. It was a stunt for attention and a bad one.

3. Yes, I will root for Tamp Bay. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3504613

4. Things are going to end badly at Iowa for Kirk Ferentz. http://myespn.go.com/blogs/bigten/0-1-89/Kirk-Ferentz-speaks.html Ferentz was already one of the most over-paid, under-producing coaches in college football. Now his program is turning into Colorado-East. In watching these things play out over the past two decades, it never, never turns out good for the Coach.

5. Mark Cuban owning the Cubs could be one of the best things to ever happen to Major League Baseball. Because he’s innovative, unafraid of change and willing to try exciting things, he’ll never get approved by the other owners. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3503599
