Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .
TRASH DFW-AIRPORT AND GET A FREE FLIGHT!!
At Big 12 Media Days Tech Coach Mike Leach encouraged drunken sportswriters to come out to Lubbock via Love Field because “DFW is a confusing mess”. Now, DFW officials have fired back with a passionate plea to Mike and his family to come take a tour and get a free flight. Oh goody. http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/07/you-are-here-dfw-ready-to-give-leach-a-t.html I can’t imagine anything worse other than having to pay for the privilege of going through DFW to get to Lubbock.
Hey, Capps, if you really want to support Lubbock and Tech folks, get out and work for a full repeal of the Wright Amendment. You don’t need it any more. Get out and compete for business.
DENNIS DODD STILL BUGGIN ME
http://dennis-dodd.blogs.sportsline.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6270202/9463227
CBS Sportsline folks should take a serious look at Dennis Dodd and what motivates him to cover college athletics and how he bestows what I consider a special privilege to vote for college football awards and honors. I’m still bugged by his column yesterday where he all but says Tech’s Harrell and Crabtree are out of the running because Mike Leach made it inconvenient on the “national media” to talk to them. Gee, I thought it was about what you did on the field that mattered, not who you talked to and when. Dodd tried to imply that it would hurt Tech’s chances at PR and attention but it didn’t seem to slow down The New York Times, admittedly no cbssportsline.com but a decent rag nonetheless, from doing a story on Tech Football, which is what Mike Leach wants. Leach wants Tech Football covered and not just one or two players. Leach remembers all too well the troubles of 2006 which nearly derailed his program. He won’t make those mistakes again and it seems to be working.
As for Dodd, he’s now the poster child for the lazy, whiny sports writer who in this day of easy travel, and the ability to cover sports from anywhere via the internet wants everything handed to him at all times. A friend of mine had a great line yesterday on the subject when he said that he’d been denied backstage access at a Jimmy Buffett concert, but that didn’t stop him from listening to and loving Jimmy Buffett songs.
Dodd comes off revealing far more about himself as a journalists then he does trying to paint a picture of Mike Leach hurting his program’s chances at PR and exposure. As a member of the Sports Media Fraternity I was more than a little disappointed yesterday in Dodd.

By the way, I happen to know Ken Capps’ wife (who works at Southwest Airlines, no less), and they are both avid UT supporters and very involved in Longhorn booster activities. Not exactly an impartial view there.
Great job on the blog. As a native South Plainsian stuck in Big D, I have to rely on you guys to keep me up to date on happenings in the Hubbaplex and Red Raider athletics.
