5 THINGS WE KNOW ON A FRIDAY: JUNE 6,2008.

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

5 THINGS WE KNOW ON A FRIDAY: JUNE 6, 2008

1. This is a very worthy organization and I encourage you to do what you can to help them do even more great things in the Hubbaplex: www.treasuredhearts.org . Thank you Jenny for all your hard work and passion.

2. Congrats to former Red Raider Baseball players Zach Stewart and Roger Kieschnick on going to the Reds and Giants respectively yesterday in the Major League Baseball Draft. Economically it would make no sense for them to turn down the offers they’re about to get, so if I were advising them, I’d say take money and best of luck! If you want to see a really messed-up college baseball story courtesy of Oklahoma State pitcher Andrew Oliver and his “advisors”, check this out: http://www.sportsagentblog.com/?p=1301 . I think there’s enough blame to go around here and nobody smells good at the end of the day!

3. I’m actively rooting against Big Brown in the Belmont this weekend. Don’t dig his trainer Rick Dutrow, and don’t want their barn to be the home of a Triple Crown winner. Horse racing has a sense of karma about it sometimes and history says that the “unbeatable” horse often gets beat. It’s a long-shot, but I’m saying Big Brown is a big flop this weekend.

4. If you’re in the Hubbaplex this weekend, you need to check out Joe Ely and Joel Guzman http://events.lubbockonline.com/lubbock-tx/events/show/82558039-joe-ely Saturday night. Not sure where the A-J got the photo of Joe, but my guess is 1989. “Cool Rockin’ Loretta” with an accordion, don’t miss it!

5. With the passing of former Tech football player Stoney Garland this week, I’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the hard work of so many in and around the Tech Family that worked tirelessly to help him and his mom. No one did more than Spike and Rick Dykes for that family and they should be held in high esteem by all for the way they went above and beyond for a young man, long after they were associated with Tech. Here’s an article from a few years back that shows how Garland used his accident to teach kids to learn from the series of mistakes that led to his accident. http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/092801/upd_075-7347.shtml .

  1. I’m all for Big Brown. The Jockey’s son has a rare disease causing him to go blind , he has almost lost all site. This would be one of his last visual memories.
