5 THINGS WE KNOW ON A FRIDAY: MAY 9, 2008.
Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .
5 THINGS WE KNOW ON A FRIDAY: MAY 9, 2008
1. If the political Smart Guys are right it looks like Lubbock will have a new mayor come Saturday night. Right now we’re predicting Tom Martin with 53% of the vote taking the win. The early voting returns from earlier this week didn’t reveal a huge increase in turnout from two years ago, and that doesn’t bode well for Martin. If there were a huge sentiment to vote Miller out of office, it would have been reflected by a highly-motivated electorate turning out early to vote. That didn’t happen. For that reason, I’m leaning towards the low end of the polling numbers that has Martin up over Miller. Now, if Martin does win this hotly contested contest, the next question becomes whether or not David Miller will gracefully exit stage left, calling for a meeting of all Hubbaplexans at his Spirit Ranch (now accepting donations!) or will he go with a scorched-earth policy against his opponents, real and perceived? There’s a lot of wind in the wire talk that West Texas Lawyers could be very busy over the next few weeks. Stay tuned.
2. A Hubbaplex Gentleman went for an eatin’ record last night at a local joint that rhymes with “Airigans” and frankly, let’s just say according to all reports; eatin’ contest should be left to the pros. The attempt was 36 Pedro’s Tamales in six or so minutes. After The Williams and Hyatt Show odds makers’ established and O/U of 13 we are sad to report this Gentleman could only muster 11.5 tamales taken down. Reports last night had him trying to convince the ladies on hand that it was really 12, but most said it seemed like 4.5. . .
3. ESPN Radio’s Scott Van Pelt has been a refreshing change on SportsRadio 1340 KKAM in the afternoon. SVP has a chance to regain the fun and entertainment aspect that ESPN Radio has been missing in the mid-days since Dan Patrick decided he was DAN PATRICK and didn’t need Rob Dibble.
4. Does anyone really think it’s a good idea to have more than two teams advance out of any district in Texas High School Play-Offs? Seriously, this dumbing down on the post-season experience is out of control.
5. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will win this weekend at Darlington.

You’re about about 8 points too low on your prediction for Martin and the lower turn out reflects David’s people of last year not voting and Martin’s people making sure Tom gets elected. don’t you love the smell of scorched earth in the morning… poor David… His political expiration date is tomorrow!
