LUBBOCK POLITICS “TRYING” TO GET DOWN AND DIRTY, A-J LETTER WRITERS HATE MEAT, TAX MY GAS AND WHY I DON’T CARE IF COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYERS GRADUATE!

Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .

BELL VS. BEANE

http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/050708/loc_276233755.shtml

“We’re trying to run a comparison to give voters the information so they can educate themselves to make the best decisions for the city,” Bell said. “If anybody is running a negative campaign, it’s certainly not me. That’s the basis for the comments in the piece.”

That’s my favorite quote from the A-J’s story today. Honestly, I don’t care if a guy wants to go what we call “negative” today and slam his opponent, more power to him. But please have the guts to admit that’s what you’re doing and not try and hide behind semantics. As for allegations by some that the legendary Ted Parker is trying to buy this election by giving donations to certain candidates like Paul R. Beane, all I can say is that based on the paltry sums given out it may be the worst attempt in all of Texas political history to “buy” an election. L.B.J. would be so disappointed that folks out here think we’ve got a wing-ding of a battle going on. How soon we forget the “good, old days”.

SPEAKING OF THE LUBBOCK AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Here we are just a few days from a major election and last week we had two days with no local letters to the editor about anything and today I open up the paper of record and get this: http://lubbockonline.com/stories/050708/edi_276233039.shtml

Man, talk about hard hitting. Oh, and a memo to Leonard L. Atkins: We get it. You don’t eat meat! Get over it. Seriously, does the A-J have to print every letter this guy writes to the paper? Every few weeks I get reminded that there’s a guy named Atkins that hates meat. Makes me want to go to Beef O’Brady’s and get their one pound burger which I highly recommend by the way!

Where are the substantive discussions in the A-J here in the last few weeks of the election? I’d even settle for an editorial praising Phyllis Jones and telling me to vote for David Miller over what we’ve gotten the past week or so. What gives?

GAS TAX HOLIDAY WON’T SAVE YOU MONEY

http://www.thestreet.com/story/10415445/1/gas-tax-holiday-good-politics-bad-finance.html?puc=lhhome Here’s some good reading if you’re interested. Bottom line is that the “idea” that people are saving money will actually cause people to drive more this summer, thus fueling demand, driving prices and making the oil and gasoline companies more money, which I have no problem with. The loser will be the U.S. budget at a time we need to raise revenues (notice I didn’t say taxes). It makes for great politics, but on this one, Barack Obama actually has it right. Of course knowing Barack he’ll contradict himself on this point many times over between now and June.

I DON’T CARE HOW MANY COLLEGE ATHLETES GRADUATE!

http://doubletnation.com/story/2008/5/6/232731/6383 Here’s a good breakdown with links on the latest “Feel Good Efforts” by the NCAA to make you think they care about athletes graduating. Texas Tech is doing fine in this effort and I maintain anymore that holding coaches and departments responsible for athletes graduating but not the English professor is hypocritical. I find it funny that the NCAA promotes education by taking away educational opportunities for kids by taking scholarships away from schools that fall below the APR line. That makes sense, doesn’t it?

MORE LATER.
