5 THINGS WE KNOW ON A FRIDAY 5.2.8
Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were . . .
5 THINGS WE KNOW ON A FRIDAY 5.2.8
1. Texas Tech made the right move earlier this week when they announced pitching coach Dan Spencer will take over for Larry Hays when the Tech Legend decides to call it a career sometime after the 2009 season or beyond. This will keep other schools from negatively recruiting Tech and telling kids they won’t know who they’ll be playing for in the future. We had Spencer on The Williams and Hyatt Show this week while he was out recruiting and he basically said that Tech has to have a serious talent upgrade on the mound, get deeper, more lefty arms and bigger, stronger position players. No news flash there, but it does drive home the point that talent-wise, Tech just isn’t in position right now to challenge for a top four finish in the Big 12. Hopefully the full impact of the new staff will come to fruition with this year’s recruiting class, as they really didn’t have a chance to make an impact on the 2008 season.
2. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I was wrong about LCU Baseball Coach Nathan Blackwood. When LCU hired the relatively young and inexperienced Blackwood I thought they were punting on a once proud program. Blackwood was a nice guy, had great LCU connections, but nothing about him screamed “Brilliant Hire”, “Great Coach”, “Supreme Talent Evaluator” and the likes. Now it does. http://www.lubbockonline.com/stories/050208/spo_274577162.shtml Now ranked Number 1 in NAIA play, LCU is carrying the water for Lubbock baseball fans. Blackwood is a big reason why and I just wanted to publicly say again how glad I am I was wrong about the guy! Great job Chaps.
3. Before any more news comes out, let me say that at no time have I ever been a friend to, have had a relationship with him or his family nor do I even have a Roger Clemens baseball card. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=munson_lester&id=3377204&lpos=spotlight&lid=tab7pos1 As the Clemens saga turns more “Days Of Our Lives” than baseball I just wanted to distance myself as many know I “was” a big fan of Clemens as a pitcher and would have loved to have had him in a Ranger uniform. (I’d have loved to have had Mindy McCready in a Ranger uniform too, but that’s a different story) Now, hasn’t the Mitchell Report been good for baseball?
4. Back in the Hubbaplex, I think Mayor David Miller and his advisors completely misjudged how the latest attack ad on Tom Martin was going to be received by the voters. http://lubbockonline.com/stories/050208/loc_274576395.shtml If this was the bombshell Miller referenced earlier this week at the end of his debate on KFYO the bomb may have exploded in his own face. This woman has little to zero credibility with me or most folks, and the nature of the ad has been taken to be disingenuous at best and perhaps an outright lie at worst by many voters. It appears to be a last desperate act by a man desperate to hold on to a job he didn’t do very well in the first place. Sad that this is what the Mayor’s race in Lubbock has come to. I’m voting for Roger Staubach.
5. Just wondering, but do Dallas Mavericks fans still think Mark Cuban is cool and whatnot?
