NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL WINS SPRING GAME, GETS ORANGE BOWL BID AND WOWS POPE BENEDICT XVI

SOUTH BEND, IND – The echoes woke up Saturday afternoon at Notre Dame stadium as the Fighting Irish won the annual Blue-Gold spring football game 47-46 defeating a determined Notre Dame squad in front of an adoring crowd that included ESPN Radio personality Mike Golic, Regis Philbin and Pope Benedict XVI.

Head Coach Charlie Weis said the win proves that Notre Dame is back in the national limelight and deservedly so after beating a team as highly thought of as Notre Dame.

“This is what we’re all about,” Weis said. “When you can line-up on a Saturday afternoon in front of a half-empty stadium and play a game that doesn’t matter to anyone but us and win like we did today, I think it says it all about where this program is”.

BCS officials must have agreed, as they immediately issued Notre Dame an Orange Bowl invitation for the January 2009 game.

“Hey, they just beat Notre Dame, what more can you ask of a program but to come here and win, “ said BCS Commissioner John Swofford of the ACC. “Seriously, we had Kansas in the Orange Bowl last year. They’re nice people and all but all they did was fill-up the KOA Campground sites and eat at 7-11. We’ve can’t afford to take the chance that a Texas Tech or Boise State could get hot and do that to us again.”

BCS Commissioners were in South Bend for their annual meeting at Lucky’s Gas and Go Supper Club, trying to determine if Notre Dame would continue to get consideration for BCS eligibility that Major Conference teams do not. At the end of the day the Commissioners agreed to allow Notre Dame to get a BCS bid if they beat any service academy, had a minimum of three former NFL players’ sons on their squad or could guarantee their ratings would be higher than that of a re-run of Deal or No Deal.

The BCS also agreed to allow Notre Dame to use 13 players on the field at a time in certain situations.

“Let’s be honest, they need the help,” said Swofford. “It is not like they can do it all the time; only when they need a big play against a power like Navy or something.”

The exciting game had its awkward moments though with Pope Benedict serving as a guest coach and repeatedly calling for the “Hail Mary” pass-play near the goal-line and Mike Golic at one time calling up co-host Mike Greenberg on his cell phone and having the stadium P.A. pick-up his demand that Greenberg go pick-up his dry cleaning and then go clean his pool.

Notre Dame will open the season September 6 when they host Modoc High School of Indiana on NBC.

  3. Try getting a sense of humor, Ed. It’s all in good fun, although it’s funny how close to reality it seems to be at times. Notre Dame needs to quit being elitest and join the Big Ten, although I’m not sure what they’ll call it at that point, maybe they’ll just keep on calling it that since they haven’t changed it yet. Anyways, as long as they keep getting coddled and allowed to get in the BCS easier than anybody else outside of West Virginia, they’ll keep right on doing it. Maybe someday the Catholics will get tired of watching bad football and the Notre Dame Broadcasting Channel will pull the plug on that sweet deal they have. That’s the only way anything will ever change.
