Good morning West Texans and all you good, fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were. . .
THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT. . .
I can’t do a better job explaining the good stuff to come out of the weekend for the Texas Tech Baseball team than Chris Snead did in this post on raiderpower.com http://mbd.scout.com/mb.aspx?S=188&F=1653#s=188&f=1653&t=2243260
There’s a lot to like right now about this team right now even though I’m sure the record isn’t what some would want nor is the turnaround happening as quickly as some of the more deluded might have expected. There’s still a lot of work to do to get Texas Tech back into a top-4 in the Big 12 level program. Good news is we’re seeing signs that this year will serve as a launching pad for the future.
Lots of folks are wondering what happened to Tech’s Roger Kieschnick over the weekend and even his production last week at A&M. The biggest factor working against Kieschnick vs. some great hitters in the past at Tech is that he just doesn’t have a ton of consistent protection around him in the line-up. Right now Big 12 pitchers are going to opt to not give him much to see and take their chances against Thennis, Kreder, or Seefeld. The guys right ahead of Kieschnick are benefiting right now because opposing pitchers would much rather challenge them and try to get them out before they reach Kieschnick. When the rest of the team makes them pay for working around Kieschnick, he’ll get better pitches to hit.
LADY RAIDERS ROLL THE SOUTHLAND’S BEST, OLD “FRIEND” UP NEXT
This should be an interesting match-up Wednesday in the third round of the WNIT when Texas Tech hosts former SWC door-mat TCU. The Froggies fortunes have improved dramatically since the days when you could name your point total before the game and decide how many minutes you wanted your walk-ons to play that night against them. Even with success TCU has still, along with some other SWC cast-offs that didn’t make it to the Big 12, held a grudge against Texas Tech and the other Texas Big 12 teams over the years. Anytime TCU gets a shot at a Tech, Baylor, A&M or Texas they turn it into a holy war and make it personal. Because of that the Lady Raiders are going to have to match the intensity of the Frogs early on because they will definitely come out to Lubbock with a chip on their shoulders ready to play.
Personally, I’d never play any of the former SWC teams in non-conference (throw in New Mexico as well) in any sport at Tech. You’re in a no-win position when you play these people because if you beat ‘em you were supposed to and if you lose it’s the end of the world. The TCU’s of the region use these games as huge recruiting wedges anytime they can get one but I can’t think of a single recruit in any sport that would come to Tech because of playing or beating TCU or New Mexico . . .Still, it’s much better to be a Have than a Have-Not. . .
