WHY CAN’T THE NBA FIGURE IT OUT? THE SPURS AREN’T THE PROBLEM.

Good morning West Texans and all you fine, friendly folks out there who wish you were. . .

SPURS BREAK OUT THE BROOM, NBA BREAKS DOWN

I must confess, I was once an NBA junkie. It’s true. During the 1980’s I openly talked about the NBA with friends, watched numerous games (including regular season before Christmas) and even had “game watching parties” at my house with full knowledge by the Feds. I didn’t leave the NBA though, the NBA left me.

Until the NBA realizes that it’s teams and rivalries, not individuals playing one-on-one vs. other greats the league will continue to fall further behind the NFL, College Football, NASCAR, Tiger Woods and Friends, edgy series on HBO, insipid reality shows on NBC and the literacy rate in Louisiana.

While the NBA had great stars in the 80’s like Magic and Bird, the Dr. and Kareem, it was always about Boston vs. L.A. It was Philly and The Boston Strangler vs. The Celtics. Even later it was still the Pistons trying to hold off an improving Bulls team around some kid named Jordan who could score but really didn’t do much else at that point that mattered. (hmm, sound familiar)

The NBA missed a great chance to promote a great team in San Antonio the past few years. They’ve had great rivalries to build around in Phoenix and Dallas and San Antonio and even some of those teams that allegedly play in the East. Instead, the NBA continues to focus its energy on finding the “next Jordan”. He’s not out there.

There’s nothing wrong with the game of Basketball. There’s plenty wrong with the way the NBA wants to position its product. Too bad. I might just become a fan again someday. Instead, I’m more excited to see if Gibbs Racing can break Hendrick’s stranglehold this week at Michigan and whether anyone can run down Tiger Woods on a Sunday at Oakmont. NBA? Sorry, I’ve got better things to do and so does most of America.

More later today. HYATT
